First, many varieties of Miscanthus don't start blooming until late September and on.

Second, local (immediately local) conditions can influence blooming habits. I get different bloom times from the same variety of grasses in different parts of my garden. Sun, wind and water all have an influence.

Third, are you sure the grasses are Miscanthus? Can you post pictures of the non-blooming ones?

Which is more narrow and erect - gracillimus or graziella? I'm going to buy five of one or the other.

Take a look at the comparison chart at Bluestem. Gracillimus blooms later than graziella, and has slightly wider blades. Both are fairly erect when young, and both tend to spill out into a more lax form as they age.

My SM Gracillimus just started to set blooms this past week while I was away. Previously there was nothing. My SM Giganticus has been blooming away for several weeks. Last year, they both started about the same time. The weather this fall was cooler than last here so that may very well be a determining factor.

Graziella (planted in 2002, had to be moved in 2003)started blooming the last week of August. Picture taken 9/19/06 shows the blooms already silvery (start out sort of pinkish beige). Sorry, do not have Gracillimus, but my Strictus just started blooming this past week and only has 3 flower stalks so far! Purpurescens fronds start coloring in early September and flowers appear in between the other two. Variegatus has seldom puts out any blooms for me until October & in recent years I have taken to cutting it down when it reaches 3 ft or so, because it always flops, so blooms aren't an issue.

This spring my lanscaping Co planted me Dwarf Yaku Jima that was only supposed to get 2-4 ft....It is now atleast 7 ft ...My question: Can Dwarf Yaku Jima reach this height?

'Yaku Jima' is a dwarf variety of M.s. 'Gracillimus.' It should only reach 4' in foliage height and 5' to the plumes.
