You may want to reconsider planting one of those on your property. I have one that is more than 40 years old and has been nearly destroyed twice by strong winds, while other close by trees suffered no damage. Birds consume the small berries and I am constantly removing seedlings from every part of the garden. I am removing what is left of mine from the last windstorm, which left it badly broken and very unattractive.

Ok, I think THIS is the tree that I was told was some kind of a cherry. I agree with Razorback, it's a scourge here. I think we are just outside of it's native region, and it is overly zealous here. I have THOUSANDS of seedlings constantly trying to grow from the weedy trees in neighbours lots. I have cut down many of these very young trees since we bought our property too. Luckily, once cut down they die from the roots easily.
I find their scent not so much as pretty, but as "dog stinky" like a bradford pear is "dog stinky" in scent. Frankly, I don't think you'd be too happy if you planted on of these trees here.
Trees Atlanta is having their semi-annual tree sale Oct. 14th, and I highly recommend going to that sale in Peidmont Park. Get there as early as you can, look around and ask questions. Their prices are really great, and they have a wonderful selection of native trees.
