The common name 'flame grass' actually refers to its fall coloring, which is one of the best fall reds I've seen. It is a clumping grass, although you'll find it is not quite like the sinensis varieties you might be used to. Purpurascens grows with short-spreading rhizomes, although it holds fairly well in a clump.

Of the miscanthus varieties, Purpurascens is one of the more hardy, so a good selection to handle tough winters. I've heard that it can survive even in zone 3.

Purpurascens prefers moist, well-draining soil, but will grow in a variety of soil conditions, in full sun to light shade. When selecting a location, be sure that it receives ample moisture. More than you'd give most miscanthus.

I'd plant it soon and give it a chance to get established before winter. Good luck and enjoy it, it's a great grass!
