That is a Curcuma, a type of ginger. They go dormant in the winter.

Very cool. Thanks.

Definitely looks like a keeper - possibly a ginger ??

Kinda looks like hidden ginger...?

GoogleImage is a great resource for me on stuff like this.

Here is a link that might be useful: GoogleImage

I just had one pop up too! Must have come from a swap because I don't remember buying it. And I would never have planted it so close to the brom and the sedum. It's cute though.

Hi
I would guess a Curcuma, member of the gigantic ginger family..Some go dormant and some do not .Amazing how rapidly they grow when they break dormancy. I think a good way to grow them is in pots. That way they can be moved to the front so you can enjoy the flowers and put in an out of the way place when dormant. This also avoids the problem of getting overun by winter plants as well as forgetting about them lol. Also controls them, some will become invasive. It does not avoid the problem of which ginger is in which pot lol.. I've heard that you can put labels on them to avoid that problem. Sounds like a lotof work though lol gary

I am certain mine came from a swap, too. I think I put it there before the greenhouse was built, also because I would not have planted it there (just like Kate) in that spot. I think I will leave it though and just work around it and be surprised every year. I'm with you Gary, labeling is too much work. Thank for all the input.
