Yeah, been there, done that! I had two in my potted roses so I had to avoid them for awhile. I haven't seen any others.

I got stung by a packsaddle (sp?) worm this weekend. I guess that is something different though.

You got stung by a WORM? I'd like to hear more about that, see if you can figure out the real name of it. Was it in the ground?

For the saddleback stings, I find that immediate application of ice helps reduce the effect. Unfortunately the affected area is not always immediately apparent and the fact that they usually are on the underside of a leaf means that you get touched in several places before you even realize what happened. Truly a nasty affair.

Yeah on Sat, I went to NC to get my trees for the street planting I'm doing and also for my neighbor's yard if you read that whole thing and there was a lot of corn fields around there and supposedly those worms normally hang out in the corn. I didn't see it but was walking around the nursery and felt the sting and I said to the guy "ouch" I must have just got stung by a bee. Then a few seconds later I was saying a lot more than ouch and jumping up and down and groaning in pain and he suggested that it was probably a packsaddle worm. I asked "how long have I got to live?" He said it's not deadly so I went back to my truck where I have a first aid kit (one of the best aftermarket accessories one can get for one's car) and I put some antiseptic and pain killing ointment on the stinging area and the pain went away very quickly.

I'll bet he was talking about the same thing, just using a different name for it. According to the Dictionary of American Regional English (sold on amazon), the two are the same thing.

Oh, yes. I can advise using ice to help with the pain. It was the only thing that helped.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea and google search didn't turn up much. That dictionary of regional english looks like a neat book. I was hoping the sample pages would at least go up to "parkin' deck" which is a phrase I have yet to hear outside of the Atlanta region.
