Wintering over bargain grasses in Zone 5a

Hi,

I just purchased some grasses this week at prices I couldn't resist. I don't think I should plant them in the ground now and am wondering about the best way to keep them over the winter. We have had frost- the best one last night but still not killing much.

The grasses are Pennisetum Hameln which I know likes warm weather to grow and Imperata Cylindrica Red Baron. I can sink them in the ground, keep them in the garage or basement whatever you think is best. Thanks!

Keep them in the garage or basement. You're at the cold end of their hardiness ranges, and they will not survive in the ground, in pots. They'll need a good long growing season to establish a root system sufficient to handle your winters...much deeper than the pots will allow.

Garage might freeze. Would the basement be better and if so should I water them a bit?

In that case, the basement would be better, and a little water would be required, but not as much as during the growing season.
