We have purchased and gutted our new cottage. Taking out ceilings and making the vaulted, beamed, white rafter look. Took out fireplace and will replace with a see-through fireplace. Problem is, there is red brick used all over property (front wall, front of house, trim area) and it will be too expensive to take out and replace with stone. I'm afraid if I use stone, instead of red brick, on the fireplace, it will look odd with all the red brick outside . . . no continuity. Anyone have an idea for this fireplace? I'm thinking a rustic wood piece instead of a structured mantle. If you think I should continue with the red brick theme, any creative ideas so it's not just an ugly red brick fireplace? Pictured is the outside of the house (we are going to sandblast off the spilled grout, and I'm thinking of staining the existing brick to give it that weathered french country look.) And the old fireplace, and the placement of where the fireplace will go in the open new room.
