Can anybody tell me what type of squash or gourd (picture attached) this might be and whether it's edible? It's 9 inches long and the narrow part of it is a little soft, but other parts are hard.

I picked it up yesterday off a vine at a local pumpkin patch and forgot to ask the people working there.
