Tree pruned crepe myrtles

I read somewhere, and I can't remember where, about pruning a crepe myrtle so it will grow high before the first branches sprout out. I planted 6 bare root Natchez Crepe Myrtles and I have pruned off the lower limbs and tied it to a cane so it will tend to grow staright up. Am I doing this correct? The idea is so you get closer to the wonderful bark of these trees.
