Sometimes the healthiest and most robust plants come from the compost pile, just waiting to be planted in the garden. Plus its a surprise!

I would recommend removing the seeds to the extent possible to prevent them from spontaneously sprouting and taking over. If you want to grow the seeds, collect them and plant them under controlled conditions so you get the quantity you want in the location you want.

It is better to chop up the pumpkins into smaller pieces if you want to speed up decomposition in the pile. The more surface area you have, the faster mother nature works. This doesn't need to be a lot of work. I throw the pumpkins into the pile and then I use the hoe to chop them down into smaller pieces. Takes less than a minute to get the desired results.

Composting the seeds depends on how adventurous you are. If you want to see what may become of them a compost bin is a great seed starter. If not, seeds sprouts are easily disturbed by turning of the compost. I chop my pumpkins or water melon up as much as possible to speed up the process. I break them up to fit into a 5 gallon bucket, then use a flat spade type shovel to chop it up inside the bucket. I ram it down in the bucket like a fence-post pounder and keep walking around it. If there is some available I will add some brown material or current compost in with it. Makes a good chopped up mixture well on its way to a quick compost! The more you have a material broken down the faster it will compost.
