Gee, I sure hope you saved some seed to plant next year. Your description does sound like a Rouge Vif D Etampe.

Since then I've found smaller flattened pumpkins that are more likely to be Rouge Vif D Etampe. But since I cant be sure of the growing conditions and possible cross-pollination of any of them, I just composted them all. Maybe some of them will grow on their own next year. :)

Could your large, red warty pumpkin be the member of the Hubard squash family known as Victor, aka 'Red Warty Thing'?

I grew it a couple of years ago, but mine did not get as large as the one you describe.

It is featured in Amy Goldman's squash book, on page 53, if you have a copy, or you can see a photo at the Rupp Seeds web site. Amy describes it as weighing around 24 lbs. and being roughly 13" long by 15" wide. If yours is quite a bit larger than that, perhaps it is a cross between Red Warty Thing and a larger squash.

Thanks Okie, it probably was a Red Warty Thing, just a very BIG one, probably in excess of 40 pounds. It did have thick red stringless flesh, so might have been good eating. I saved seeds so maybe will try planting one next year.

I can't grow them that big here in southern Oklahoma! Too hot and too dry! Good luck with yours.

I was given one similar last year...not deep red but definitely reddish/rust in color and looked like a giant Cinderalla. The fruit looked beautiful and there were hundreds of seeds. I started some early in the greenhouse but lost the first batch due to a weird California cold snap. My new batch is doing well and I'm anxious to see if I can actually grow these.
