Carmanmarie-I did some searching but didn't come up with much information on spirit pouches.I posted the question on another gourd forum I go to and the information I got was this:They are made from small gourds.The top of the gourd is cut off or a hole drilled in it for a cork to fit into.Some are painted with designs and some are decorated with wax and beads.They can be worn as a necklace or on a belt.They were used to hold things that were important such as trinkets,healing stones,herbs,seeds,etc.Hope this helps.I think they would be interesting to make.

Thank you for the Welburn link, it isn't quite what I was looking for but plan on making one of those cuties. Although the small gourds I have are twice that size, but they will do till I find some tiny ones. I was given some info on how to make the pouches, you use a small, about 4" high bottle neck with a fat neck cut in half length wise and at the neck across. So now you have two pouches. Now glue leather on the back drill holes along the outside of gourd and stitch to leather,or put thin plywood and use hinges. I plan to hang beads,charms,etc.on it.
