Maiden Grass

A landscaper planted 3 clumps of Maiden Grass in my front yard and when asked said it didn't get big like Pampas grass. Well, it is clumping big and high. After finding out what it was, I have looked it up and it can grow 6-8 ft. tall and 3-5 ft. wide. I don't NEED anything this big! I want to be able to see my mailbox down the way. Can anyone suggest something with a vertical growth pattern that I can replace this with? I don't need anything wide either...maybe 2 ft.wide and max. height of 3 ft.

There are dwarf varieties of mainden grass that are available that only get to the size you need. There are also lots of other bunch grasses of that size as well.

Why grass and not one of the many terrific shrubs that grow here?

Grasses are a good low water use choice plus they have year round appeal.
I like Muhly grass and Karl Forester reed grass.
The Muhly (Muhlenbergia)is lower growing and wider at the base than the reed grass, both have nice ornamental seed heads.
