Hi Rita, great question. What about moving the fan more towards the fireplace and then doing separate lighting on the stairs (small chandelier?) and in the kitchen? What kind of style are you going for? Any photos on Houzz that are similar? If you copy and paste the Houzz url here, it will show as a photo.

You may find that ceiling lighting won't work and lighting the stairs is the better option. If you ceiling is really high, how will you change bulbs?

The stairs will be along the wall of the great room descending towards the fireplace wall. Any chandelier would be in a corner as there is about 6 ft from bottom step/riser to the wall. I will see if we can move the fan. The style of the house is Transitional. White kitchen, shaker doors, stainless steel appliances, chrome pendants on island, and fixtures. The stairs are, thick dark wood steps and hand rail with white pickets, In the process of picking furniture.

@rita_kukla what did you end up doing? this describes our new build pretty close and im trying to decide to do lighting in our two story great room, or just a fan and then lamps. We had one electrical contractor tell us that 6 can lights would light it up real well.. but now im thinking,. how are we going to change the bulb when its out??
