Operation Luffa Harvest went down today. Let me describe my luffas before I started. They had two 20 foot long fences, five foot tall, which were of course covered. They'd spread twenty or so more foot into the snake infested field behind that, all the way up and over the chicken pen and chicken house roof (they were growing through the wire INSIDE the chicken house). They also gone out into the other side of the yard and covered most of the rest of the garden in late summer, too.

OK....so, what was my final tally? About 115 luffa's give or take...not sure when I lost count. Six or eight I had to dispose of -- apparently some kind of wild creature likes to eat luffa...rats, skunk, possum, coon, I dunno. They ate the skin and left the luffa to rot. Another six or so are too small...probably won't dry out, though I'll try them of course. Two had child helper accidents ruining those. Net total = one heck of a lot of luffahs...most are 18-24" in length, some 12-18". A few are as much as six inches in diameter.

I am utterly fatigued. THe only way to harvest them was to cut through the jungle cutting down vines and hauling them out back to the compost pile. I think I got all but one or two luffahs though there are still a ton of vines to cut and haul (one luffah had grown through the fence...going to leave it there though I'm sure it'll rot before it dries.)
