first time gourd grower

Hi all!

I want to try growing gourds this year for fun. I want a big one just for decoration. I thought I wanted a smooth skinned one until I seen a type called "Dinosaur" in a seed catalog. It can grow 24"-36" long and looks to have veins on the outside.

Anyway, here are my questions. On the seed package it says for best results to grow on a trellis. I thought instead of a trellis, what about an arbor? I went to St. Louis's Botanical Garden last summer and they had some sort of overhead arbor (using wood lattes??) with gourds growing down from them. It was SO cool.

I don't quite have the wind breaks from all the building like they had. Will the wind whip them off? How close of grid work does this need to work correctly? Just curious what other gardeners have tried.

I thought this would be so cool as an entrance to my garden.

thanks
