A couple of weeks ago I started a whiners' only thread to give everyone a chance to moan. New here's a braggers only thread to give everyone a chance to celebrate what went right. I'ts almost the end of the season. What pleases you, looking back over the last year?
Last spring a neighbor and I chained the ugly foundation shrubs that came with the house to the bumper of his car and pulled them out. My goal for the summer was to put in something more garden like. Summer is almost over, and I am almost done.
I put into this 24' by 8'space: two daphne odora for late winter scent (one died and am now waiting for the replacement to get here); three creeping gardenias for early summer scent; five Royal Standard hostas for late summer scent. I left the camellia that was at the end of this bed, and it is now covered with buds - yeah!!!. I have two Southern wood ferns in the shady part of the bed
The center needed something and I couldn't think of a plant, so I put a huge container there. This summer it was filled with asparagus fern and some red-leaved annual I don't know the name of. Now the fern is potted up for the house over winter, and the container is full of pansies and tulip bulbs. The best thing I did was plant some annual salvia around the container. I wasn't sure I liked it until this fall. I am really impressed with annual salvia. It's gorgeous.
The only thing left to do in the foundation planting is put in the new daphne when it gets here and go to Goodness Grows this week and get some hellebores to edge the ends of the border. It took me all summer to do so little, but it is done. Better yet, I have finally finished covering the area in front of it (where nothing would grow) with liriope. After two years, my liriope project is done too. So good to be done.
