gardenia substitute?

Ok, I'm giving up. I can't keep the bugs in check and the sad little gardenia is too pathetic for me to continue nursing this fantasy that I can grow a gardenia.

So it's coming out, bugs and sad leaves and bald stems and all.

But, it was perfect there in its fantasy existence as a compact little green bush with pretty flowers that smelled wonderful. So.... I need a small shrub that will not grow fast and need pruning to stay small. I would like for it to flower at some point. I'd love for it to smell nice (that would assuage my gardenia grief a bit.)

Any ideas? The spot receives morning sun until almost midday. There is a cabbage palm above it that provides midday dappled shade and then my neighbors hedge shades it in the afternoon. I've planted cheap big box bromeliads under the cabbage palm, and pushed cheap big box orchids into the boots of the cabbage palm... and I've gotten blooms on both just recently. So my little ecosystem works, except the gardenia.

Oh, and the bat plant that many of you offered me suggestions on how not to kill _ well, it's in the dwindling shade of the gardenia. The removal of the gardenia will certainly kill it, if it's actually just dormant and not quite dead, unless I replace the shade quickly.

Any ideas for a quick replacement?

Susannah
