check the AJC - there was an article in it about more people drilling wells. May answer a few of your questions - did say that it was around $100 per foot and most wells in Georgia needed to be around 400'

Thanks for the tip. I saw the article this morning in the Sunday AJC. I probably don't have the space to meet the requirements of being far enough from the house and/or the drain field. Anyway, it sounds like the well diggers are in a heyday of work. I probably couldn't even get in line. I suppose that the powers that be will have to look at restrictions for well owners one of these days, since they will be taking more and more of our water supply away from the rest of us. Pray for rain!!

It would be an expensive option too. I believe that article mentions one person paying $15,000 for one. Don't have that kind of money lying around!!

Not to mention water quality is, from what I have read, not very good. You may need regular additives and testing.

By additives, I mean filters.. More like removatives :-)

We looked into having a well about 20 years ago. We have an acre and a half and a septic system. It turned out that because of the closeness of the drain field and the lot lines there was only one tiny circle in the front yard where it could be drilled. Then there was no guarantee water would be found there and with no place to move the search to it just wasn't feasible to try. But I would love to have had a well.
