I have had no luck growing any phoriums or dianella's here. They don't seem to like the mixture of heat and humidity. I know they are grown in PNW with humidity and soil moisture, but it seems to be the mixture of heat in there they don't like.
When it's dry and hot they can do OK too, like in California.
I've tried in a well drained pot with typical cactus type soil, I've tried in well drained soil in the ground..I've had them in sun, in part sun....never happy!
But that just could me me :)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I may try a couple of them in a hot and dry location, on a slope, among the Aster georgianus, Oxblood lilies, Silene regia, Scilla, Dianthus, Phlox and Stone Mtn Yellow Daisys. That location receives full afternoon sun, from noon until SS and is outside of my irrigation zones.
I am always up for a gardening challenge!

I grew Dianella tasmanica in a woodland situation. It seemed to do fine, but I would suggest digging it up in the winter. Winter cold never killed it, yet it seemed to dwindle and not quite recover. Phormiums do great for me with well-draining soil and full sun. I protect those in a cage of leaves over winter. They can take down to 20 degrees or little lower without protection. I love trying new plants.
