If it is already a year old then My guess is that it should be finished compost in another year. I think it was a good idea to have it spread out for a while then mounded up. Mixing the organic material with the dirt should be tremendously helpful also as the dirt carries microbes that innoculate the compost and help break it down rapidly. The only other things I could suggest would be to water it occasionally during dry periods (not soggy but moist) and it would he helpful six months from now if you spread the pile out then mounded it up again. Meantime you could be reading "Teaming With Microbes" by Jeff Loenfels. See my review on this book at the link below. When your compost pile is done it should be a bit smaller than it is now also the area where it is should be a good planting site as the nutrients have leached into the soil and drawn earthworms to that spot.

I had a small mound - about the size of a Volkwagan Beetle - of ground up trees. It took a little over two years to run into good compost. I used a lot of it to loosen up soil after about the first year. Before that it wasn't of much use for anything but mulch in a few odd places.
