You might want to do a little research on those specific plants. Some plants root better if you take new growth cuttings (spring/summer) rather than old growth ones.

Where are the rooted cuttings now? Still in water or in potting medium?

Right now the rooted cuttings are in a mix of sand and peat (the rooting medium). They're starting to look a bit anemic.

I've read about the fatsia- what I've read said it roots easily. If anybody has some I could cut from, that would be fantastic. Otherwise I might have to buy one to get me started. I'm not sure about the laurels. I've read that they get stressed in the summer here when it's hot, so maybe it would be better to root it in the winter and transplant in the spring.

According to Dirr's Manual, cuttings of the Laurels, taken in late summer, rooted easily in sand/peat in 7 weeks, without treatment.
He also states that cuttings of Fatsia japonica should be taken from fairly firm wood and provided with bottom heat.
If you know someone with a Fatsia japonica, they could probably provide you with some root suckers in the spring.
Seed is also an option.
My experience with 'Otto Luyken' Laurels was dismal. After 20 or more years, without seeing the first flower on half-dozen of the healthy looking things, I composted them!
The only good thing was that the birds didn't scatter the seed all over the place, because there were none!

Thanks Rb. It seems like everthing I read says something slightly different. I suppose I'd better just wait til spring/summer and try it when there is a little heat. I want the 'Otto Luyken' for foliage, so I guess its ok if it never blooms. I'm more worried about their tendency to fungal diseases, but I think that's more in greenhouses or nurseries where they're watered overhead.

i don't know about the specific plants you are talking about,but i've always had much,much better success rooting anything in the spring.i love begonias[as in angelwing].i remember once a lady had advertised in the farm bulletin,begonia cuttings for cheap or free.she must have had at least a hundred different kinds of big beautiful begonias.she had her entire attic turned into a greenhouse.i got two 5 gallon tubs of cuttings for $10.i was SO excited.i have a heated greenhouse and went all out to get these cuttings to root.it was late november,they all died but one.LOL
