I have asarum splendens. It is great. Evergreen, beautiful, flourishes on complete neglect. I've had it three years now. It's doing well. Got mine at Goodness Grows over in Lexington. I have it planted at the edge of a woodland garden. I love it. This year I'm trying to start some from seed for another woodland garden. Don't know if that will work out or not.

I have the locally native ones, Hexastylis arifolia and Hexastylis shuttleworthii. I also have the deciduous one Asarum canadense. To clarify: According to C. Ritchie Bell, author of the Flora of the Carolinas, only the deciduous species are still in the genus Asarum, the evergreen types are now placed in the genus Hexastylis.

There are about 110-120 species(opinions vary) of Asarum in the world and about half of those are easily or moderately easily cultivated in this area. I would start with some of the Eastern US natives, A. arifolium, A. shuttleworthii, var. harperi(the so-called Callaway Ginger), A. minor, A. virginicum, A. naniflorum and by all means A. speciosum, a species found only in 3 Ala. counties, that has the most spectactular flower(calyx) of any US native!
Japanese species that do well here are; A. asperum, A. caulescens(deciduous), A. costatum, A. hexalobum, A. kiusianum, A. kumageanum(1st choice for attractive leaves), A. megacalyx, A. minamitanianum, A. nipponicum, A. sakawanum, a. subglobosum, A. takaoi, A. yakusimensis & A. hirsutisepalum. Chinese species; A. splendens(mentioned above), A. maximum(Panda-faced Ginger), A. campaniforme(Hort.)(species A. campaniflorum?), A. chinensis, A. forbesii, A. delavayi, A. magnificum, A. porphyronotum, A. longerhizomatosum & A. macranthum(Tiawan). I have these, plus others in my garden and they require little or no special attention after becoming established. Largest threat to new plantings is animal curosity and being uprooted. Best trnsplanted in fall or spring, but have reset them successfully anytime during the year.

plant delights nursery has some nice wild gingers. they have the one mentioned by razorback(asarum speciosum) listed but currently out of stock. perhaps this spring they will offer it again.
