peonies

I have a really old peone in a very 'hot' garden. We moved in last spring, so I didn't know quite what to expect. It didn't bloom but looked healthy. I have since dug it up and repositioned it. It had a huge woody root system which I removed. This garden might be too dry and hot for it. What do you think? And how can I help it.
