bonsai

Hi, I have ordered and recieved a bonsai for my daughter for a Christmas gift. I know nothing about them and am beginning to fear keeping it looking good until then. It was very saturated when I recieved it, I assume this was to keep it in good condition while shipping. The instructions say to water every 3 days. Some of the roots are exposed. Is that natural? I tried to recover all the soil and tiny pebbles that had come out of the pot into the packaging. It is potted in a container. Should I keep the soil as moist as it was when I recieved it? It is a Hawaiian umberella tree. It is nice and bush and green, but I am noticing some light greening in some of the leaves and wondering if it is too wet. Sorry for the long post, I am just concerned about it. Thank you for any help you may be able to give. I am in Cumming, Ga.
