Typically the dry wound is caused by a deficiency in boron. Boron is essential for cell development. I have often found seed cells woody and empty of seeds; most likely an incomplete pollination.

A complete soil test can provide some direction of fertility needs. Imbalances may need correction. Finding such symptoms on a single plant should not be a major concern.
