Can we do another SNAKE id?

One of the cats brought this to me today.

(My cats are confined to the screened patio so you don't have to tell me about how damaging cats are to the local bio-group. But if critters come into the patio, then they are fair game.)

What is it?

Here's a picture of the head (note the dark markings):

The domino is there to show the size - this is a small snake.

This shows the pale belly:

This was taken with a flash so you can see the markings on the back

Looks like a one of the crowned snakes to me...very small, harmless little guy. Maximum size under a foot. This one is marked more like the southeastern crowned snake than the Florida crowned snake, but perhaps there is some overlap in their breeding range, or some variation in their coloring. Oh, WAAAAYYYYNNNNE????? Which do we have here?

Yep, definitely a Crowned Snake! As far as the precise subspecies, I think its a Central Florida Crowned Snake.

That's the one I thought, due to range, but the lack of a solid black head kept me from being sure. I reckon there's some variation in coloring, most likely? Sweet little snakes, aren't they? Of course, my favorite small snake is the rough green snake.

They are such a lovely color, and very passive little guys, usually. And they have bright orange tongues, which really look pretty with their coloring.

I've never seen one longer than about 2 feet, and usually much smaller, though my books says they can reach 45" or so. I like their pretty faces!

Actually, it has been some years since I've seen one of these. I don't know if they are disappearing or not. Will have to look into that, or maybe Wayne knows, if he isn't tired of our snakey posts yet!

Kate, is your crowned snake alive in the pics? Can't quite tell. Hope so!

    Kate,

Excuse me for butting in on your post butt:)

What do water snakes eat? I found another one (different) in my pond, swimming underwater, fat, with bands stripes, kind of orange/apricot and my fish are still in the pond?

    Thanks, Pat

Pat, water snakes can eat fish, frogs, crayfish, tadpoles, and other such things. Depends on the type and size of the snake. Sounds like you might have a banded water snake. Does this look like him?

    Marica,

He had those kind of bands, but in general was lighter in color and more light apricot color. Also the bands were very straight and I think they were light in color (the outside of the band/edging. Hey, maybe I don't have many fish left. I only saw one. The snake was very fat. I'll try to get a picture but the water snakes freak me out a bit since I am not familiar with them like I am my garden snakes. Thanks, Pat
