Amaranth can work in all areas of Hawaii;
Oats do well in all but coastal areas, wet or dry;
Quinoa and Rye want elevations of 3000' and above, in dry areas;

If you haven't seen the Permacopia books, you're missing out on a great resource on growing all kine plants in Hawaii. You can request them from the library, buy them on Amazon, or get them in Hilo at Basically Books (probably other places, too). Volume I, covers native Hawaiian and canoe plants (I call it Local Plants); Vol II has tons of imported plants (Haoli Plants); Vol III is the Weed Book (%##&& Haoli plants)

Aloha Mangobingo- We have grown corn, amaranth, quinoa, rice, sorghum, millet, and now Durum wheat for the first time this year. We are five miles from the ocean at about 300 feet elevation on the Big Island Of Hawaii. Quinoa likes it cold, and did not do so well. Amaranth (Golden Giant) was very productive, as was (Golden Rose, bought at the natural food store-bulk foods section!)rice. Harvesting during rainy periods is going to be a challenge, and drying the grains. I am thinking quinoa should be planted in the fall here maybe. It is worth growing just to see the scintillating, surreal colors, especially dazzling in the morning dew.
