Unless the dead leaves are mushy or diseased, there is real reason to cut it back yet until you have good growth and it is past the last frost for your area. Those old dried dead leaves can kind of protect the new growth from further frost damage until then. Once the last frost date has passed you can go ahead and trim off the dead leaves and stems.
