Interior doors

Hi Marla, your home is really beautiful. We are building our new home and wondering what interior doors you have used? I am also planning to either stain or paint dark chocolate color. Did you stain/ paint your interior doors? Thanks

Hi, and thank you so much! We used the most basic interior doors you can get, and in the most inexpensive wood. I loved the look of all-maple doors, but the reality was I knew I wanted them to be as dark as possible without looking like they were painted black. So there was no reason to get expensive doors, as long as they were well made. We did use all solid-core, though ... in our last house, to save money we used hollow-core wherever we could, but it just wasn't worth it.

I can tell you that our painter went through several diff techniques trying to get everything stained as dark as I wanted it - we had our cabinets locally built, so they had to be stained too (rather than being ordered that color.) He really struggled for a while, before discovering that if he lightly washed the wood, the moisture helped it absorb the stain SO much better. Just fyi ... he's an amazing craftsman, and said he'd never had so much trouble getting the right color (he'd also never had someone say, "as dark as you can possibly get it, without looking like it's painted dark brown/black.") Haha!

If I can help you with anything else, don't hesitate to ask - I love talking about our house, even now that we've been in it a whole year!

Thank you much for your reply. I was debating between hollow or solid core doors as solid core are little bit expensive. But after hearing from you we have rethink about it. What brand doors did you buy? Are they covered with veneer? I am planning to buy Masonite flush veneer door. That is a good tip to wash the wood, I will definitely keep that in mind.
