Usually the flower clump (bloom head) is planted together as one, a clump of growing ginger looks better than a single stem, and gives you more chances for good blooms, since not all blossom offshoots produce flowers, at least not the first year or two.

Thanks for the info. I will plant them as a bunch then. I'm just worried about all this forcast of a very dry and hot summer. Do you think I should put off any planting until after the summer? We are also putting cinder dirt on our backyard to plant the grass on. We've had no rain up until now. I worry about my water bill as well!
