Pineapples are in the bromeliad family. Most bromeliads in their native habitat(Central and south america) live on tree branches. Pineapples are one of the few bromeliads that live in soil and i believe the only one that produces fruit. Having said that, bromeliads do not produce deep root systems. They gather the nutrients and water from their whorls. The roots are merely to keep them from falling over. So dont worry so much about the soil, in fact I think a little more compact soil might help them from falling over. In hawaii, the pineapple fields are typically grown in red, compact clay soil. Thank you for the information. Are the Whorls the green shoots on the top? Should I poor water on them more than watering the soil like another plant?

Whorls are the cup like feature that most bromeliads have. Pineapples dont really have a distinct whorl like most Bromeliads. I would just water from the top of the crown and wet the soil a little to increase humidity. Pineapples are not that fussy and are generally easy to grow. Good Luck!
