If you have even the slightest doubt as to the identity of a plant, don't eat it! In Nature, there are many harmful look-alikes.

Take a fresh and generous sample of the plant to a nursery or botanical garden and have it properly analysed and identified by an expert.

If it is Common Mint (Mentha spicata) or one of its 600-odd edible relatives, then you can eat it in any way you like. There are thousands and thousands of mint recipes floating around the WWW.

I will take a picture soon. I hope it is edible.

where did they come from ? did you have them in the same spot last year ? the year before that ?

you can go on google search, loog at the images of various kinds an see if you can find a match. Then read about it.

Ok, finally, here is the picture. There are 2 kinds. My questions:

1. I chewed both. I don't think they can be used as salad.

2. If I make tea, do I boil it? for how long?

Can you also take a picture of the whole plant?

Is does have a mint-like look. Does it have a square stem?

Tea with mint leaves isn't boiled. You pour hot/boiling water over the leaves and let steep.

FataMorgana, they are about 10 inches tall or 20 cm now. The plants look just like the cuttings. I will check if the stem is squared. You could click on the picture to see a much larger resolution.

Never seen curly mint like that but the other one does look like Spearmint. If you rub a leaf between your fingers and smell them that will tell you if it's worth it. Checking for fragrance better done in the morning before the afternoon sun hits them.

It does not look like either spearmint or peppermint, but belongs to the same family. I have seen some like that growing wild. They are a bit tough and grow very tall, I think.

The one on the left looks like Mentha spicata, spearmint, to me - the kind used to make mint sauce, mint raita and mint tea. Leaf shape varies as does flavour. I have some just like it in a glass in front of me now. The other looks like curly mint, another type of Mentha spicata. Mint is fine in salads but only a little, not as the main ingredient.

Yeah that's mint

I really think it's spearmint and not peppermint. It has to have less side effects when used but it is considered a great healing and culinary herb! it's great for fresh breath!
