The cages are about the same for in or outdoors. Outside you need a roof to keep rain off and roll-up sides will help with that too. Place the hutch out of the sun or maybe very light early morning sun/dappled shade.You might consider keeping earthworms in the space underneath the cages

I live in South Texas...is it too hot to raise them here?

My wife and I are raising rabbits, two does and a buck.

I've built four hutches, one for each of the adults and the fourth to hold the little guys, all kept inside a real old shed.

I kept the hutches simple in design but big enough that the rabbits have a decent amount of moving space. I took 4 lengths of 8 ft, 2x4 and nailed 6 upright lengths of 3 ft 2x4 to make the basic frame. 2 uprights at one end of the 8 ft lengths and 2 at the other, then the remaining 2 placed 2 ft from the end. I then took 6 pieces of 2 foot square of 1/2 inch plywood and closed off a box, hinging the very back so I could clean it out and I used a jig saw to cut out a 12 inch access hole for the rabbit entry - sort of like a Gothic door. I'd recommend using at least 3/4 inch ply wood, even a full inch if you can afford it. I used 1/2 inch galvanized square grid wire mess on the bottom and chicken wire on the sides. I'd recommend using the 1/2 inch mess all round. I made the lid out of 2 lengths of 6 ft 2x4 connected to 2 pieces of twenty inch 2x4 and 2 pieces of 2ft 2x4 nailed over top of that for weight and to strengthen it. I used chicken wire for the lid as well. The hinges for the lid were 4 Stanley 3 inch door hinges, on account of it being so heavy. The fasteners to secure the mess and chicken wire were 1/2 inch "U" spikes, and 3/8 arrow staples. Total cost per unit was just shy of $50.00, not counting my time. First one took me 9 hours to make. I did not have a clue what I was doing and no plan to work form. The last one I banged off in 1 hour 40 minutes. I was proud of that! Good luck.
