Next step for easter lily.

hi
Wife bought 4 of these gorgeous plants at easter of course. So as they faded i set them in semi shade in a bed
They have completely died down but are growing many roots through the drainholes and the bulbs are still very firm in spite of the daily rains..Obviously the original mix was to encourage growth and feel its retaining way to much water. as it enters dormancy. Tempted to just place them in the soil but it's pure sand and seashells lol
I'm really surpised that they have not already rotted but what the heck why not give it a shot. Any suggestions on a "dormant" mix as well as how much light?? When should I expect them to regrow and flower?? gary

I just planted them in my flower beds in a mix of sun and in shady spots. My soil isn't just sand though. They usually bloom in June and into July. The bulbs multiply so you end up with more then you started with. I have grown them for years now. :o)

Gary, go ahead and plant them in the ground - our full sun is too hot for the blooms to last, so plant in morning sun and afternoon shade. They will come back from the bulbs next spring and bloom for you.

Plant them, LABEL them and ignore them - they will surprise you next year! The soil mix that surrounds the bulb mass right now is enough soil to get them growing.

    hi
Figured a cool/cold rest period was required since the commercial ones are mostly produced in Oregon. and native to Japan Think i will put them in some kind of trough so i can move them around . hate plants that go dormant lol
    Thanks for the info. gary

I forgot to mention them go dormant, thanks to Kay for telling you. I know what you mean about dormant plants, I always try to plant something on top of them forgetting they are there. :o)

Gary, no cold period is required - if you plant them, they take care of themselves and bloom the next spring.

I saw this batch of EL in my neighbors yard last month. Had never seen them like this around here before. They're planted in the ground in full sun and the tallest ones were over 6' tall. They were gorgeous. I'll be collecting them when folks throw them out next year ðÂÂÂ

    hi
Transplanted them to the east bed that gets about 15 minutes of sun per day Shouldn't matter while dormant anyway. Since my canopy has returned i'm going back to a layered tropical
eliminating everything that goes dormant except for gingers because of the foliage , looking for evergreen if not everblooming lol
the lilies are beautiful but for such a short time.. Will probably have to pot up when they emerge as there's only one small area left that get more than 3 hours of sun lol
Oh well can always trade them for something?? lol Thanks again gary

Been planting them out in the garden after Easter for years. Find them starting to grow in December and bloom in June. Have quite a group of them now. They are in the garden where I have old fashion roses and Crinum lilies.
