Themes

I was just reading through some things and got to giggling at myself. Sometimes I buy plants because of their names....like anything that has chocolate in it has to be good (and often the plants are).

I'm married to a Cuban who fled in 1967 when he was just a kid, but I still have Cuban Nancy and Shades of Havanna (he was born in Havana) and I look for ones which have that sort of theme going on. In addition, he loves bananas...(which I don't particularly care for) so Going Bananas found it's place right in there with the others.

Anyone else do that sort of silly nonsense?

I haven't yet,but I keep looking at Nursery Rhyme named ones as I was thinking of doing a bed for my granddaughter.

I don't buy daylilies with a theme in mind unless color/location count, but many in my garden have names that are quite interesting, or maybe even strange. I have friends that buy DLs with names that match their children's names. Come to think of it, I do have some with names that describe events in my life, but I did not buy them for that reason. The first requirement is that I really have to like how the DL looks.

And I agree, any DL with chocolate in it's name should surely appeal, and remember you can eat the buds.
I do have the DL Chocolate Ruffles, but I never tasted it. : ).

lol..I should have qualified that...if it's ugly, then I'm not buying it no matter how great the name is. Shades of Havana is a great double yellow to my mind...

I have bought daylilies and have been disappointed because the photos have obviously been doctored (even taking into consideration that differend temps/humidity/soils can make a difference), or that don't have reference to hardiness...and as much as I might like them, I'm NOT paying $300 (or even $50) for a daylily....I'll wait until they drop down from the stratosphere....

I have never gotten into name themes as I have to like how things look when planted together, but have purchased some for name only, and will name one seedling regardless of it's coloring thanks to a comment made by a friend.

My DH had me buy Hillbilly Heart because he said it fit me better than any flower bearing my name... his only input into any of the DL's I have purchased.

I snicker now every time I see Mask of Eternity. An old friend came out to spend some time with my mother and I two weeks ago, and was walking our gardens with us. I had been telling her about trying my hand at daylily crosses before we walked. Mom takes notes when I take pics and vice versa, and when I said "this one is Mask of Eternity" so the picture was documented, our friend said "did you say Massive Maternity???". So now you know what one of my seedlings from that plant will have to be named....

And I had intended to buy Walking With Bill and plant it as a thank you for all the work my Dad had done to help me build my beautiful world. As it was still relatively new, I had wanted to wait until the price went down a little--had purchased some seeds on the LA in the meantime to maybe come up with a more personal tribute. He was taken from us unexpectedly this spring, so now I will be buying the flower regardless of the cost this fall....

Sometimes a plant with the correct name has more importance that the prettier one right next to it!

Generally, I only buy DLs with a form and color I really like. I have to admit to a bit of whimsy, though. We have 3 indoor-only cats, 2 of whom are rather plump from easy access to food and not enough exercise (the third one, I think, is just naturally tiny). Once in a while, the 2 plump ones will get the crazies and race through the entire house, eyes wild and tails fluffed.

After watching this happen repeatedly one night while online ordering DLs, I ended up with 3 new daylilies named Pink Dingbat, Scatterbrain and Little Fat Cat. They are now planted next to each other in a fairly prominent part of the garden.

Julie - LOL. The BF and I have a running joke like that - whenever we don't understand each other, we say what we think we heard, which turns out to be very funny. Great way to name daylilies.

I have been thinking about buying some with family names - but not for my garden, for gifts.
