A Sad Goodbye

Dear Garden Web members. I have been a member of the Garden Web for many, many years and have learned so much from all of you. A lot of it had to do with daylilies, which are my passion. I have over 100 different varieties of daylilies, all named and marked, and have tried hybridizing them, with one truly beautiful and prolific cross. But the economy has brought that to an end. Both my husband and I have lost our jobs, and after struggling as best we could for the past year, we are being forced into bankruptcy. The sad thing is that even though we think we have found new jobs -- decent jobs --- by being willing to relocate (and believe me, I am truly grateful for that), we will not be able to purchase any property because we will have no money, and thus I will have no where for gardens, and all of my beautiful daylilies that I have collected over the past two decades must be left behind. My sister is willing to keep four of the results of my hybridization program, so I won't lose them -- they CAN'T be replaced. I suppose if push came to shove, the rest could eventually be replaced. But I am sick at heart at leaving my gardens, my home, and so much else that will have to be left behind.

I've read the papers. I know other people have it much worse that we do, and we are so blessed to have full time, good jobs to be going to. But it still doesn't make it feel much better. I been out every day watching my daylilies and other flowers blooming, and wishing I could at least take a photo (wouldn't you know it, this is the summer our camera broke and we can barely buy groceries never mind buy a new camera.)

I wish I had somewhere I would transplant my daylilies to until I knew I could come back for them, but who knows how long --- if ever -- it will be before we will be able to afford to buy another home where we can plant our own gardens.

I am opening up my gardens to my friends and telling them to come and take what they want. I have no idea how long this place may sit empty, with so many houses on the market, and if I can't have them, I'd just as soon they go to people who want them.

Thanks for listening. I know there's nothing you can do, but at least I feel better having "gotten it off my chest", so to speak. As fellow daylily lovers, I know you understand how I feel. Many thanks for all your help over the years. MacThayer

    DEar Mac,
I am so sorry that life has caved on you. I am glad that there have been a few rays of sunshine and that you have jobs to go to.

I cannot imagine your grief at losing so much you hold dear.

Be sure that better times will come. (I am speaking from experience). When they do, and you have land again, let us know...I will be happy to send you some starters. The one really good thing about daylillies is they do grow and multiply, so it is always possible to share.

    Stay in touch...

Life comes with its ups and downs. Look at the positives which will help you through the hard times. You have jobs where others are still trying to find one. Maybe you won't have a garden right away, but who knows what will come along. You have alot of experience with daylilies and your input is always welcome in sharing your experiences.

Good luck with your new jobs and relocation. Your starting a new adventure in your lives. One door closes and another one opens. Stay positive and come back on the forum and let us know how things are going.
I'm sure I have a few daylilies when your ready to garden again, that I can send to you.

I'm very sorry to hear what you're going through right now. I know how hard it is to part with something that you have come to love and enjoy and it makes changes even more difficult. I wonder if you've considered potting up some of your favorite lilies and taking them with you? I'm sure you already know that DL's are quite adept at thriving in pots for as long as their nutrient and water needs are met.

I tried to find an email addy via your "MY PAGE" but the link won't work for me. Maybe GW is having some problem going on.....don't know. Anyway I'd be happy to home a dozen of your favorite DL's for you until you get back on your feet. I have about 400 registered CV's and around 2,000 seedlings growing here right now so what's a dozen more?

Space isn't a problem here....we live on a farm and just plowed and tilled another 1/2 acre of ground a couple months ago to use for next years seedlings and the new CV's arriving this fall. Also put in a new well to supply water for this new area. If your interested you can contact me via email opnjmprs@hotmail.com

If I were in your shoes I'd wish someone might be able to temporarily home some of the ones that were special to me.

We almost moved as well this year and I would have had to leave all my daylilies. The thought depressed me so much so I know how you must feel!

Before I got into daylilies and perennials I lived in an apartment and got into houseplants, succulants, etc... And a few hardy perennials in pots on a small very small deck. Believe it or not, they can be very satisfying to grow. There are some very beautiful ones and they even bloom much to my surprise.

I know it will never be the same as daylilies or having a garden, but hopefully in the future you'll have a garden again somewhere and I know everyone here will gladly help you accumulate a collection.

Maybe you could even sell some now to help make money and know they are going to true daylily lovers.

I wish you the best in wherever you are going and I'm sure everyone here understands your feelings.

I wish I was in your area I'd give you a hand. When you get back on your feet let us all know. As many have done already I'm sure I'll have some to spare when the time comes to rebulid what you have lost. All you need to do is ask.

Many Hugs to you and your family,

I am so sorry to hear about your hard times. We have hit a few ourselves and are just barely hanging on. Please make sure you keep in touch and when the time does come and you have more land I would be very willing to share some of what I have. After all, it is mostly by the kindness of fellow gardening friends that I have daylilies and other flowers. God bless you and I will pray for the best of things to come to you.

Macthayer, I am so sad for you..I was thinking that I would know how you feel. I can only imagine it though. It's wonderful that you have new jobs though because times are really tough. My dh and I are both retired but we have a few concerns too!! Anyway, I could house some for you but if not, I certainly will share if you just let me know when you are ready..God bless you in your new journey. He makes all things possible, at least they are all possible for Him.. Keep in contact as you can.. Ellie

MacThayer, I'm so sorry you are going through such a difficult time. I wish you all the best and hope the two of you are back on your feet in no time.

I don't know what area of WI you are in but I am about 45 minutes north of Minneapolis/St. Paul, probably not too far from you. I would be happy to be a "foster mom" to some of your DL's until you get back to a point where you can garden again.

Depending on where you are I would be happy to either drive to your [place or meet you halfway.

Feel free to e-mail me if you are interested in discussing this option.

It must be heartwrenching to leave what you have cultivated and nurtured.

I hope that whereever you go, you find some place in the area where you can go to get a good dose of gardening and I hope you seek out a gardening club to keep you going.

May I ask where you are moving to? There may be some others here who would be able to help out in your new area if you could bring some of your daylilies with you. Just a thought.

I am so sorry about what has happened. It is always difficult to leave things that we have cared for and cherished.
The new jobs are beacons of hope and opportunity, and a new chapter begins. I wish you all the best in this new start.
The time will come when you're ready to garden again, and please, just let us know. Daylilies grow and multiply, and there are lots to share.
