a question about seeds

Do daylily seeds HAVE to be put in the fridge awhile before they will germinate?OR,is it ok to plant them now in trays.I planted less then a dozen seeds last year that I collected off the mini's I have, but don't remember if I planted them right away or stored them in the fridge awhile..The ones last year didn't all germinate, but the ones that did, after they were up 3 or 4 inches,I planted them in 4 inch pots and kept them in them till spring, then planted them in the garden..I planted a few seeds I gathered last week and none is coming up yet,so now wondering if they have to have a cold spell first.

They should germinate in 7-10 days, but I have had seeds from the same cross germinate over a period of several weeks, all in the same pot.Dormant varieties need to be stored in the fridge for 6 wks,or they may not germinate. If you are going to store your seed, air dry them for about 3 weeks before putting them in the fridge or they could mold. Evergreen and semievergreen can be planted right away or stored in the fridge.

Hi Jean, Everyone does this differently. I never refrigerate any of my seeds that I am going to plant this year. The fresher they are, the better germination I get. I only refrigerate seeds that I plan to store. If I do plan to store them, I dry them for 2 or 3 days first. I have had seeds take any where from 2 weeks to 6 weeks to sprout...so don't give up yet. Also, this year when you have seedlings 3 or 4 inches tall, why don't you plant a few in the ground (instead of a larger pot). This is what I do and once they are in the ground, mine really take off. You could try it and compare. Good luck,

I'm no pro with daylily seeds, but last year I started with fresh seeds & had great germination with no cold treatment.

ngraham, did you soak your seeds at all or just planted them directly in the soil?

Well, I really thank all of you for answering my questions.last year I planted a few seeds that I had pulled off the Stella's and some Little Wart pods.AndI don't remember how long it took for them to germinate,Not long I don't think, but gee, that was a year ago,so didn't remember what I done last year with them mini seeds. The ones I have planted this time,I put them in water for a couple hrs,and they floated, which surprised me.I thought them things would stay on the bottom, not float,so maybe they not any good anyway.but I am trying anyway. They sat on my counter for a couple weeks, while I was trying to decide if i should put them in the fridge or plant them.I think 6 of the seeds was from a pod off Buttered Popcorn, and right now,i don't remember what the others were off of.I have it on a little marker which DL it came off of. My other seeds set on the counter for 2 weeks, and I finally put them in some little medicine bottles that my Blood Pressure pills came out of and put them in the door of the fridge.I thought I need to find out if these has to be in the fridge for 6 weeks first before I start planting them.A few of the seeds,I really want them to germinate and grow,as some came off my one Strawberry Candy, and the others has come off a couple unknowns thatr was given to me and they are so pretty peach color and pale yellow and are rebloomers.
Kathy, I will try a few as you suggest and plant them soon as they are a few inches high.Maybe they might grow faster that way? Right now,i am guarding a little plant that came off my Strawberry Candy scape.I cut it off and have it planted in a 4 inch pot,in the shade. Its looking good so far and hoping it grows.
Betsy, thank you, these little seeds I planted about a week ago, hasn't started coming up yet.Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have to admit I'd not even considered the EV or DOR etc. thing and since most of mine are dormants , I guess my experience of having to refrigerate them for good germination isn't the case when it comes to the EV or SEV ones. The last time I forgot to refrigerate just one particular cross, I only got three out of a limited number of ten seeds to germinate, but the following year with refrigeration got 100% to germinate, with a different cross!

katladie, I didn't soak or anything. I did keep the soil pretty damp til they started to germinate. Took about 2 weeks if I remember right before they started to take off. Some are quite a nice size this year. I did keep them inside & grew them in a sunny window overwinter. I think I lost some during the winter. I wish I had planted them out in May or so, but got busy & didn't plant til it got quite hot. I believe if I had planted them early, a few would have bloomed, they got quite large even in the smallish pots I had them. And I just originally planted them in 6" pots, they were quite crowded. I ended up with over 50 daylilies that I planted out, if they survive this heat. I think I did start out with about 70 seeds, so I did lose some either they didn't germinate, or during their potted stage. I know I lost some because they were so crowded.

Some people swear by stratifying the seeds(placing them in a cold environment for a period of time) and others say it makes no difference. I have tried to research this and what I have found from some agriculture univerisities is that stratification seems to increase the temperature range for germination. So if you do stratify, the seeds will germinate over a wider temperature range thus giving you a better chance of getting them to germinate. Does that make any sense?

That is what I read also,Charlie. That's why I said may not germinate. As you said,it doesn't mean that if you don't refridgerate they won't germinate, just that there is a better chance that you get a better rate of germination. How does this apply to crosses of dormant and semi and evergreens? Not sure. I bought fresh seed from Viewpoint(D) x Margo Reed Indeed(SE).Of 13 seeds,1 germinated. They were not refridgerated. The temp was a constant 75,lights 16 hrs per day.
