Going Bananas

We just got back from a quick visit to the Keys and since we were in the neighborhood stopped in at Going Bananas in Homestead to buy a banana tree.

We didn't call ahead just took a chance and got lucky. Don Chafin, the owner, is super-nice and gave us a taste test so we could choose which one we liked best. (big spenders that we are-spent $20 for it).

As you can see from the photo he has bananas at the ready for whenever someone comes by.

After trying Mysore, Nam Wah, #18, Dwarf Red and maybe another one (CRS clouding brain) we chose...(drum roll)...Mysore.

Then we headed out to the fields where Don used a stick (probably has a special name like banana blade or something)to dig up our new banana.

Going Bananas is just a stones throw from the Fruit and Spice park (along with a zillion other nurseries in Homestead). It was a fun stop.

    I want to go!!!

Don sold us our first banana, at the Leu Gardens sale in Orlando, but I've never been to their place. I would love to see them all and do some taste testing too. Our is a Mysore and I've never been sorry to have it. The flavor is wonderful and holds even if you freeze the fruit for a few months. We get more than we can eat at one time, so we peel and freeze them to use for Holiday baking.

Kate, I froze the 1/2 bunch of ice cream bananas we couldn't finish eating, in their skins and they stayed really nice. I later used them in banana breads and cut them into slices before thawing. Sure made it easier than trying to cut ripe bananas! What other banana recipes do you people use? I just have my Mom's Old Fashioned Fannie Farmer banana bread recipe. I'd like to find some other uses for them.

I use yellow cake mix w/pudding in it and add a few mashed bananas. I bake it in a 9x13pan. The cake is really moist and doesn't need icing. It disappears.
There's always the pie with cut bananas on the bottom, cover with banana pudding then cover that with coolwhip.
I've also got a blueberry/banana snack cake recipe if y'want.
    Banana banshee anyone?

yum!!!!!!!!!!!!! Linda you are curling my toes.

How do you do banana fritters?? My mom used to make corn fritters and serve them with maple syrup. I also tried a banana's Foster recipe I found on line but it wasn't as good as what I have had in restaurants. It was too thick and sweet.

I got this when I was in New Orleans from the chef at Brennab's

    Bananas Foster
    by Brennan's

    Ingredients: - 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
    - 1 cup brown sugar
    - 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    - 1/4 cup banana liqueur
    - 4 bananas, cut in half lengthwise, then halved
    - 1/4 cup dark rum
    - 4 scoops vanilla ice cream

    Directions:

Combine the butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a flambé pan or skillet.
Place the pan over low heat either on an alcohol burner or on top of the stove, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves.
Stir in the banana liqueur, then place the bananas in the pan.
When the banana sections soften and begin to brown, carefully add the rum.
Continue to cook the sauce until the rum is hot, then tip the pan slightly to ignite the rum.
When the flames subside, lift the bananas out of the pan and place four pieces over each portion of ice cream.
Generously spoon warm sauce over the top of the ice cream and serve immediately.
    Serves Four
