Figs??

My son just moved into a house with what I think is a fig tree, that is overflowing with golden ripe fruit. What can you make with figs? They are small and gold, what type of fig tree is this? I would hate to see them go bad but have no idea what to do with them.

Thanks...Tina

From what I know about figs it's nearly impossible to identify what kind it is unless it's a very common variety. There are so many cultivars and the fruit's color and taste can vary greatly depending on where it's planted (as in what zone) and what kind of soil it's in.
Figs can me made into wine, delicious tarts (think fig and goat cheese in phyllo dough cups), jam, ice cream, pudding... They're great for your health so eat them up!
If your son is in Central Florida I would LOVE to come get a cutting or three for myself.
Don't forget there's a fig forum here on Garden Web.
    Good luck!

    Piri,

I live near DeLand and I have fig trees. Celeste is my favorite to grow. If you want cuttings or want me to root you some let me know. Other varieties are good but if someone only wants one or two trees it should be a Celeste or Brown Turkey.

Tina, I am not aware of any figs that are small and golden especially if they are ripe now. The main fig ripening time has past. Persimmons are ripening now and the fruit could be just beginning to color up.

chris! i was driving around town today taking video of all the flooding, and i noticed on the corner of may and adelle (next to my old house!) a large fig tree just COVERED with golden figs. (i gotta stop by and beg to pick the tree.)

my own alma has about two dozen figs on it.

so, it's not too late for figs.

tina--figs are an acquired taste. you won't like them. if you don't cook them JUST RIGHT, highly toxic.

let me help you take care of your problem. (ha ha ha.)

I'm wondering about the 'golden-ripe' comment as well - I haven't seen any around here that ripen yellow - tho the large Adriatic(?) figs will become a yellow green. You can Google-image 'yellow fig' & there are a number of varieties.

My question is; are you POSITIVE it's a fig? the original post seems uncertain.

Have you ID-ed the leaves - figs are pretty much unmistakable...

Took the leaf to the local extension service and their id was fig. They could not id the type from the leaf and told me to bring in the fruit, I will head there on Monday with fruit and let everyone know...Tina

dollars to donuts it's either alma or celeste--those are the figs you see most often here for sale (and brown turkey). probably alma, since my alma is bearing now. christine says almas sucker a lot--mine's only been in the ground a year, so i haven't had problems. christine also taught me how important LOTS OF MULCH is to figs--i had three inches, she recommended no less than six. when i mulched them that heavily, they immediately put on two feet of new growth in a month and set fruit. so, i gotta concur.

    Michael,

It is impossible that the tree is a Celeste. I have a few stray fruits left on my trees, but you saw when they were in peak. The leaves look horrible from the rust fungus too. The Celeste fig is relatively small and brown. If your Alma is producing than that must be it. The Alma is a medium golden fruit, larger and lighter in color than the Celeste. Out of all of the figs I have tasted, Alma is the sweetest. Maybe I should grow one again and just try harder to keep all of the excess growth in check. I like the idea of not having all of the figs ripening at once too.
