Is there a way to save pollen from Early bloomers, to use with late bloomers or on rebloom?

I had refrigerated some stamens from Mort Morss, in plastic wrap covered glass dishes and used it yesterday. Although the pollen still looked good, deer ate my hybridized flowers last night, so I will never know if it took or not :o(

Was this the proper method of storing pollen? How long can it be saved?
