Question for ken,EO, or anyone else in the know

Late last fall there was a discussion about popping hostas out of the soil and dropping them back in the same hole to prevent maple roots from becomming too invasive. Can this technique be done in the spring or will this be determental for the plant? Obviously I wasn't able to do the digging last fall and want to give my hostas every chance to achieve their maximum size. If it is okay to use this techinique in the spring I would wait until the plants have broken dormancy and pop a sizeable hole. Any other advice on this would be gladly welcome - other than getting rid of the maples. Thanks in advance. Sue
