Also Abiqua Drinking Gourd or Love Pat which is very similar. All three are very affordable which translates to the $9-12 range. A lot of substance to the leaves which is good if you have a problem with snails.

Halcyon would be my first choice. It's a medium size with substance and it holds its color extremely well. If you want something larger with cupped, rugose leaves, Big Daddy is a winner. Remember that the blues like full shade or dappled shade.

'Skylight' is my favorite blue. It's medium sized, an amazing color of blue, and has great substance. Also, a very good grower.

The size of the spot is about 18" around...although I could easily move one or two heuchera to give it about 24". I've been looking up all the hostas you've been recommending. Some look blue in the catalog pictures but online many appear green. Are there certain hostas that retain their blue coloring better than others, or is all a matter of how much shade/sun they get?

Kim, 3 to consider Fragrant Blue, Blue Jay and Blue Cadet. When I look up Fragrant Blue it's listed as 48" wide, but mine is 4 yrs old and maybe 24". I've linked a thread from last summer with blue hosta.

blue is a wax that reflects the sky ...

wax wears off as the season goes by ... according to overhead watering.. rain on very hot afternoons... whatever you can think up that would soften and wear off wax ...

you can photo the exact same hosta at dusk ... mid day and dawn.. and think you have 3 different hosta ..

note in the pic immediately above.. the green hosta behind... reflecting the blue of the sky .. doesnt surprise me the blue hosta seems to glow ...

might be a camera trick too ....

Boy. I'm having such a hard time deciding. Of the ones listed so far the ones that appeal to me the most are Fragrant Blue, Halcyon, Love Pat, Blue Jay, Blue Cadet, Blue Wedgwood, and Blue Shadows. They all sound like they won't become monsters and have nice blue coloring...in most pictures. Fragrant Blue and Halcyon are at the top of the list so far. I'll have to keep looking for pictures that weren't taken for catalogs. Those always look so perfect. I'll have to find pictures of them in real gardens.

I had a very pretty small blue hosta called "Blue Ice", Loved it! Had it in a pot and it didn't make it through the winter of 07. Silly me, most of my pots were put in a shed and they were all fine. The few pots I left outdoors were huge and I covered them with boards but I lost most of the hostas in those pots. I was sick about the Blue Ice! I always like Krossa Regal and Halcyon. How about Blu Angel?

I have both Halcyon and Fragrant Blue and definitely agree with Ken. Halcyon is easily the better of the two. I'm pretty sure it doesn't get too much bigger than the space you'd be looking to fill as well.

I've heard a lot of good things about Skylight, but don't have one myself.

I also have Love Pat, Blue Angel, Blue Ice, and Blue Jay. Blue Angel would be way too big and isn't really the bluest of blues. Blue Ice is probably one of my favorite blues, but might be too small. I think it's a mini. (Either that or mine isn't growing very well. haha) I've only had Blue Jay since late last year, so can't really say how it does. Love Pat would probably be a good candidate. Like Halcyon it's a pretty blue and wouldn't get too much bigger than your space.

If it were me, I'd go for either Halcyon or Love Pat. Just my thoughts/experiences. Hope they help. Good luck!

I think I've made up my mind as to which to get. I will have to get a Halcyon. That name keeps popping up, and it does look great from the pictures I saw. Thanks so much for all of the great suggestions and information!

Do you want a blue with a little more umph? If you were thinking about getting Halcyon, then you might as well get Blue Ivory. It is absolutely gorgeous! It also has a wide white border that becomes misted with blue in the summer; you can't go wrong with that one.

Halcyon is the bluest hosta I own, followed closely by big daddy. For the size you want halcyon is a great choice
