How many hostas do you have?

As a new member of the hosta forum, I am curious about how many hostas the members have. By the way, I love reading your messages in the forum.

    Dear Michele,
please be specific. Do you mean how many in total or how many different ones we have.
I have about 105 different hostas, but at least a thousand all together. When I am looking at Plantaginea it is hard to tell where one ends and the next one starts.

Manfred is correct. I have duplicates of several varieties.

As far as different NAMED varieties, I think I am at 140. I have another 20 or so sports and seedlings. Of course, there are a few that I haven't seen yet this year, so I am not 100% sure.

However many it is..... it isn't enough ;-)

Okay, Manfred, I mean how many different ones and how many total. My little collection pales in comparison whichever way we count them. LOL

Ok.....As it stands right now I have about 353 different varieties including a couple of NOID's......I have 22 on order....And probably 200 seedlings going...also just started a batch of another 100 or so seeds.....lol.....I didn't realize how many I had until now! I really do need to try and get some of them in the ground soon and stop buying more.....ok maybe just get some in the ground then that is probably going to happen before I stop buying.....lol

I have about 100 different named varieties (thanks Amber!!) and am having to move them all to my new home. We don't have nearly as much shade here so finding places to plant them all has really been a challenge. I won't allow myself to buy any new plants until I get everything moved to my new home.

    I have all 3

    Michele,

I have 147 known varieties, several NoID's, and 23 more on order, bringing the total of varieties
to more than 170. I have several varieties I have duplicates of...I'd say at least 185-190 in all.

LOL..I think I'll start moving the duplicates into the edges of the woods to make room for MORE!
i'm sick...i need help....OH Boy! did I come to the wrong place ;o)

roflol@ greenguy - the green one...the green and white one and the blue one...right??

My list isn't updated but as close as I can see, I have 200ish varieties. I have ....uh....like 180 or something on order. ROFLOL!!! I am insane.

I have no idea how many hostas I have but don't have too many duplicates. Only varieties I have duplicates of are:

    Guacamole
    Sagae
    Albomarginata
    Lancifolia
    Plantaginea
    Whirlwind
    Royal Standard
    Gold Standard
    Big Daddy
    Striptease

    ...I think that's it

    Not nearly enough!! LOL
(Over 100 different if they all come back and I get my mail orders) Trying pots for some and getting rid of duplicates this year.

I've never counted as I'm a hosta lover, not a hosta collector. The total number goes up each year because there are always new ones that are irresistible. And there are so many great ones that I need another of.

How can a hosta lover have only one Montana Aureomarginata, one Sun Power, one Great Expectations, one Paradigm?

So how many different varieties do I have? Lots. How many are duplicates? Lots.

My suburban lot keeps me sane. (small)
But we are at alittle over 100 varieties.
I have no idea of how many hosta's all together. Because we have divided some for borders and walk ways there are duplicates. So there are to many to count right now.

But we will move someday to a larger lot. Some people downsize after their adult children move out...we want more land...then watch out!!!!! LOL It will be hosta & perennial heaven. My back is starting to ache thinking about it.

HostaManFred - I love your Manfred Hosta. Beautiful. I have been collecting for about 6 years and just hit 104 varieties thanks to generouse hosta friend that thought I should hit the 100 Club! Another 27 due to arrive early May - however I deserve them because I did all the garden prep (new beds) last year...don't you agree (lol).

I definitly agree! Makes sense to me! lol You workie, you get hostas. hehe

I love both plants...but especially that first one, Manfred!

Manfred, when you get a spare piece of MT, I would love to grow it here!! :-)

At the beginning of last season I had 2, lol. By the end of 2006 I has collected 25 different varities and one duplicate.

So far this season I now have 35 different varities and 6 on order AND the nurseries are just starting to open up!

    Thanks Andrea and Roxanne,
I have to wait and see what comes up this spring. So far three people have MD, Van Wade got the biggest chunk with 13 eyes. MT is a slow grower but I have 2 of them.
To the original question, I have 100 that I bought or traded and 5 named Hosta of my own, but many unnamed wannebees. Here is a sport of Richland Gold:

    Hey Janet, "you go girl"!
This forum didn't enable you did they?...lol
I really think you need another trip to Sunrise Nursery. I hear the hosta's there calling you.
Time for another road trip don't you think? It's so beautiful at this time of the year when everything is blooming!

1500 plus or minu last time i did an inventory .... which i will be doing this year ... first time in 3 years .... ken

Ken! You are my hero! I want that many!
Well, first I better move to a 10 acre spread.

I will have 39 after mail orders arrive. Only duplicate will be Great Expectations. I got one from Bluestone last year for $7.95 and it did quite well, but after everything I've read here,... besides, Bluestone had/has it on sale for $3.98 right now so of COURSE I needed another one. Just in case!

Better watch out, it has a way of sneaking up on you. Just a couple of years ago I had 5 different varieties. Now I'm up to about 250 different varieties and busy making room for more! How did that happen???

Manfred, I love your "Parfait".....beautiful! Ken, are you out of your mind? At least 1500? Want to get married? LOL
Can you post folks post some more photos? Love what Manfred put on here for us to see. Ken, do you have some "group shots" of your horde? How about anyone else?
    Thanks for all the replies!
    Michele

Around 800 varieties. Total plants...don't know. Probably a couple 1000, counting the nursery stock. Few duplicates in my personal collection...not enough room!

I have no idea how many I have, probably more than I think and less than I want... :)

Folks, how do you inventory your hostas? Spreadsheet? Notebook? Some sort of garden journal software?

    Diann

I have 108 different kinds and duplicates because I've used some as edgers, etc.

You people are obsessed (or possessed) - not sure which!!! I have about 15 and I thought that was a lot - until I found this board. Did I catch some kind of disease??

    Michele,
wait until Papou rings in. Not only can he tell how exactly how many hostas, also their exact location, how many eyes each one has, and how many slugs on each plant. LOL
    Manfred

Swiftly swimming into the 1500 variety mark. Many duplicates and a couple of noids, sveral seedlings some promising ,others fading, two 8 foot tables full of new seedlings in the basement and not enough time in the day to set back and admire a single one of them. Spring wears me out and makes me crazy! Maybe I should take an appreciation day next month just to admire what I have and slow the whirlwind down!`

Zero! No hostas left after the big freeze of 2007! I just lurk here. Phil

Oh Phil - you know they will be back if not this year then next.

I have more than 300. Touring my garden 2 nites ago I discovered hostas that are not in my record spreadsheet.

Newbies - keep your records in order right from the start........ things can spiral out of control quickly... People here gave me that advice 4 years ago when I started collecting and I am regretting not doing that now.

    Teresa

    OH NO Phil,
They will be back. You only lost the first flush right?
Keep us posted. I don't think they are gone just stunned right now. They have to come back.

Manfred, that Mandred's Parfait is very cool! It kinda looks like Royal Tiara.

To answer the question posed in this thread, I don't know. I haven't updated my Hosta list in 2 years. Instead, I have kept invoices and then went back and circled them in the Hostafinder. Ones not in it, I just write on the appropriate page what I bought. I also have some that I lost over a few years to delete, although some I did replace already, so that's another thing to figure out lol.
Plus, I sold all my duplicates 3 years ago to make more room, but the list would be the same, because I didn't count dup's anyway. I was up to around 450ish before. It has to be around 600 give or take now, including the 45 or so coming shortly here.
Hey Josh!! I still have some to get from you that I said I was gonna pick up in person and never did ;-)) Too funny...typing this made me think of that!
    Rox

Just checking to see if anyone was paying attention!lol! Most of mine actually look pretty good, and some were were untouched by the freeze. I have 150 named varieties, and over 200 total,(not including seedlings). I planted 2 new ones this year already, including a new On Stage, and a new Liberty, because the old ones looked so pathetic! Phil

Yes, you do, Rox!! I should charge you a "housing" fee ;P

but, they were better off with you, I just know it! I should charge you for enjoying them an extra year !!

lol....that's the best answer my tired mind can come up with for now,,

Michele, go back through last summers threads, there are so many beautiful gardens from the members of this forum.
I do like seeing the pics they post of each one, but I really enjoy the pics of entire gardens.
(Ken, doubt very seriously if anyone could get sick of your pics, no matter how many you post, bring em on!)

I have 90 different varieties and about 200 total, 3 did not come back this year, Cherry Berry (who woulda thunk it) Gold Standard and *sob* my absolute favorite (always happens that way) June. That one was one I had been dying to get my hands on, top of my wishlist kind of thing.
And then the seed escapade, I cried over that one as well, a member of GW very generously let me SASBE for several cool varieties of seeds, I had them in my greenhouse tray, some moron (meaning me) moved them to the barbecue grill where that side piece is to set plates down? Well the wind sure took care of that one:( I have no idea why I chose that particular idiotic spot. Now I have told hubby there will be no lawn mowing on that side of the house, he told me to get real.

I have a couple of more orders due, and I will be knocking on the door of 300. I have ten or so in the hosta hospital. They have healthy roots, but the crown doesn't look so hot. I figure I don't have anything to lose, so I put them in a bowl of water. So far only one seems to be perking up.

An ever increasing number - Currently 126 named varieties, a bunch of NOID's and quite a few dupes/trips or more. Just potted up 4 Lady Guinevere in the house - (bought a bag of 8 roots at Sam's Club - gave 1/2 to my brother)

Manfred, your Parfait if beautiful - wish my Richland Gold's would sport like that!!

    June

last count about 220 varieties - now did that include what is on order? Good thing I'm limited by my property boundries! I suppose I could look it up, BTW a database like Microsoft Office's Access works great as you can add "fields" for whatever info you think is important, e.g. year purchased, flower color, etc.
