storing roots

We are moving from Michigan to Texas this summer and I want to take as many flowers as possible with me. In checking in my flower books I can take many of them with me. My only problem is tring to move the flowers down there. I'm not for sure on exactly what month we are moving nor do I know anything about Texas weather for flowers. If anyone can help me on these I would be greatly appreciated. We are moving from Michigan to Texas this summer and I want to take as many flowers as possible with me.

Welcome to Texas! Hostas will grow in zone 8. What other flowers are you thinking about bringing? Be careful in the heat. July and August are the worst, but the fall is much better. The Texas garden forum is a good place to get all kinds of information.

it depends on where you are moving in TX .... southern parts do NOT get the requisite cold for winter dormancy.. that hosta need ...

but i dont know the locations in TX by heart ... you will have to figure that out...

i would rather you leave the hosta .. if you are going that far south .. rather then kill them ....

when i moved from livonia to adrian.. i took 1500 pots.. what a nightmare ... i had a caravan of 4 trucks .. friends.. who moved a vast majority of my pots.. and the few very large ones... went into the moving van.. per previous discussions with the movers ...

if there is anyone in TX that is kin .. start mailing stuff now ..

if not.. start dividing and potting SMALL divisions of plants.. which will be ready to move when it all happens ... TRUST ME.. you dont need the whole plant ...

if you have kin locally ... and you can make a holding bed there.. make two divisions ... and ask them if they will send them to you in october... its a nightmare .. to move an entire house.. and try to plant a garden at the same time.. if you can break the chore into 2 independent parts.. it will give you time to get down there.. and make a garden bed.. for fall delivery ...

in fall ... have them pulled out of the garden.. thrown into a box.. and 2 to 3 day shipped .. down to you ...

there is a big difference between what you CAN do.. and what you should do ... and you ought to think long and hard about the potential nightmare you are thinking about getting yourself into ...

frankly .... if you give yourself a couple hundred dollar budget out of the move and the new house funds.. to simply make a new garden down there.. you may be better off ... because by the time you count your labor.. and potting soil.. and mailing costs... you will 'spend' a lot of time and money ...

i know .. you gotta do it .. i did ... and i wish i had made it a much smaller project .... and i only moved 65 miles ...

    good luck

we are looking ot move to the Dallas area, I'm wanting to take as many as I can, but the time line is what I'm worried about, I dont want to take them down too earily and they die out. I have started to spread them out to family members here localy so if they dont make it I can always get another start from them. I have serveral types of flowers and they range from

Peonies, astilbe, Bee balm, Bleeding Heart, chrysanthemum, Foxglove, cone flower, Shasta Daisy, Corepopsis, sweet william, golden anniversary lamium, Candytuft, Iris, Lilies, Daylilys, allium, daffodils, Hyacinthus, crocus, Ornimental onion flower, Coral Bells

The messed up thing is that I just stared the flower beds a couple of years ago with the intention of never moving, but due to my husbands injury in the service and failed back surgery he can not take the cold weather no longer. I really am still learning about all of them and tring to make sure that we can take what we can, we still have 5 kids and with moving it is costly. We will be making several trips back and forth from MI to TX this summer moving things, but Im still unsure about if there are any that I can move during the summer. We are not from TX nor do we know anyone there we are just moving and praying that it helps his back. Any suggestions if I can store and and move any this summer and how is the best way would be helpful and greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance for all your in put.

Peonies do not like it in Texas. There is some rule of thumb about Peonies not doing well south of Interstate 20. Dallas is on IH20. I have not had much luck with Bleeding Heart, but I am not ready to throw in the towel yet. I am having a little better luck with Astilbe. I have killed a Shasta Daisy or two in my time, but I think it was just me. I am pretty sure all the other plants you listed will do just fine. The gardeners on the Texas forum have a couple of trades each year. Since you will be close to the one in the Dallas area, you might be able to get some good plants that way. Moving with five kids is quite an undertaking. Hope the climate helps your husband.
