Need help with kitchen style

Hi There! I just moved into my home and would like to update my kitchen to make it more transitional (contemporary). Right now it's tuscany style (?) with heavy plaster texture on the walls and ceiling. I would like to change the tiles and the hood over the stove. The cabinets are cherry and the granite is orangey with black flecks. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! (Please excuse the mess - chili cooking!)

Yes, the range hood takes over the room. Your beautiful stove should be the show piece. By all means remove the heavy looking range hood. It does nothing to enhance the beauty of the stove or the room. Lovely kitchen . Everything else about your kitchen is wonderful.

Yup. Replace the hood with a nice contemporary stainless one and you will have a whole new kitchen. Look at replacing the knobs with stainless or chrome pulls.

I really like the stone hood...it's different. What throws me off style wise from what you are looking for is the upper cabinets with dish rack and the 1 glass door front. That does not say transitional to me. Think about updating your back splash to something a little more neutral or modern and it will give your room a whole new feel!

Way too busy, heavy and dark right? If you keep the stone make it the centerpiece and tone down everything else. If you count the colours, textures, borders, etc. you will quickly realize why the space is overwhelming.

I wouldn't do anything to the kitchen except to remove the hood and change out the backsplash for something a bit toned down. A rich brown or tan brick or even a small square tile backsplash would pick up the colors in the cabinets and granite without being too busy.

    Thanks for you thoughts everyone!
Roots and Rafters, thanks for the photos. Do you agree with stainless steel hood idea?

I think a stainless hood would be very nice. Is that a Wolf stove? I'm sure that, no matter the maker, you could get a nice hood to match.

I would try to keep the size of the hood down (don't get the biggest one they have!) so that it doesn't take over the kitchen. It depends on how much you cook and what kind of things you tend to cook, though. If you often deep fry fish, for example, a small hood isn't going to be able to clear the air well enough. If you don't do a lot of frying, you shouldn't run into trouble with a small hood.

Take a look at the stove manufacturer's website, and I'm sure you'll find an option that suits! If you find a couple of options you like, post pics here and no doubt you'll get some more advice. :)

A stainless steel hood is definitely the direction to go!

Thanks everyone! One more thing - do you think stainless hoods are going to be popular for the long haul? My guess is yes since they're so popular.

I'm guessing yes too. At the very least, if trends change you can always put a built-in around it of the color that becomes popular. Right now -- and probably for the next 10 years -- you can't go wrong with stainless.

Stainless steel will never go out of style.

All great suggestions but I don't think you will change the look much to transitional with those cabinets. They are beautiful but not contemporary.

HI -- I agree with the others to change it for a stainless and glass range hood . That corner on the right looks like a headbanger to me.I don't like the stone ,it's too big and heavy looking and does not go with the tile etc.

Thanks all! I'll do my best to try and update my kitchen the best I can and $$ will allow!
