Next year I plan to ............

I am lucky enough to still be able to do a little work in the garden this weekend... cleaning up and trying to get a jump on the spring weeding as long as the weather holds. It was 46 and almost sunny today, so it was a pleasure to be outside. I feel for all of you who are in freezing weather with snow, but at least you don't even have to even think about feeling guilty for not working on garden chores!

As I continue to read the forum and work on making my DL beds look acceptable for the winter, I have been making a list in my head of the things I want to work on next year.

Here are a few that I have come up with:

*Work on taking more clump shots of my DL's!!! In other posts talking about how exciting next years photos are going to be, Rita mentioned clump shots. I have tons of pictures of all of my BLOOMS, but spend so much time focusing on the beauty of the single flower, that I find I don't have many clump shots of some of my best bloomers. When people have been posting regarding best garden plants, I find I have very few photos to justify my input! MORE CLUMP SHOTS!

*Seriously evaluate some of the DL's that I have had for several years that have not performed well for me. I have no question that I am in this hobby for the long haul, and although I am not running out of room, I have done run out of PRIME room. There are many more DL's I would like to add, and having poor performers in highly visible spots that I could have stars in seems foolish.

*Try to record FFO and last bloom for as many DL's as I can to determine bloom season in my area. I have already been kind of working on this when I take pictures as I date all of my photos, but am now going to try to label FFO and Last Bloom, even if they aren't so photogenic.

Bunches of other plans, but those are the biggies when it comes to my daylilies. Anyone else want to share goals for coming bloom season?

I love multibloom and clump shots so I hope everyone takes those clump shots and posts new bloom season.

What am I going to do next year? First thing in the spring, plant all those daylilies coming that I got carried away with myself and ordered.

Bloom season, plan to do a better job of recording budcounts and such. Beside budcounts want to check and see if I get a running bunch of daylily bloom from early June until late september. That was the plan for things I planted this year so we will see.

I think my main goal for this next season is to downsize somewhat. I have around 1050 cv's now and really need to "weed" out about 50 of my least favorites and so so performers. I really want to keep my count to no more than 1000 named cv's. I may even try to go for a lower count, if possible. It's just so dang hard deciding which ones to part with!! :)
Another thing I'd like to concentrate on while downsizing, is organizing some of more of my beds into catagories. I have a mini bed, a double bed, a candy bed, and several Munson beds, and I've been trying to establish a pink and purple bed, and a hot colored bed. Maybe I'll get around to some of this next season, and then again, maybe not. LOL But I'm going to try my best.

And of course, I've got some newbies headed my way that'll need planting.

Like Jan, I need to weed out some non-performers. My garden is about one tenth the size of hers (daylilywise) and I am trying to keep below 100 daylilies. I also need to better organize the beds. I have some daylilies that are supposed to be fairly short but are too tall for their current locations. I also have some colour combinations that sounded like a good idea when I planted the daylilies. Apparently they were not.

I'm going to work on color coordinating a bit. I moved several around this fall, hopefully those will work out.

plant more white (or near white) daylilies.....

    lets see...
.Bloom my first seedlings (hopefully some bloom in 2nd yr but I'm told by others around here to expect only around 20% in 2nd yr, more in 3rd yr, but some not until 4th!)

    .Install the fence

.prep the seedling beds and get this years crop all planted in May instead of some as late as July!

.attend my first regional, well my club is hosting so I shouldn't have any excuse

Hopefully see some blooms from my first seedlings. They are just germinating now.

Also join the AHS and possibly the local club.

Possibly see some local garden tours.

Order some newer Stamiles and Gaskins.

And most importantly, simply enjoy my gardens.

Weed out plants that are NOT daylilys... silly plants are taking up daylily room!...grow some more seeds.

My biggy is to get my mixed beds weeded and mulched. I spent so much time in my daylily beds this year that some of the mixed beds got to looking a bit unkempt. I also need to get rid of a few rampant re-seeders in those beds. It's just amazing how much Nepeta, and Malva you can end up with when you don't have enough mulch down to slow the re-seeding. I also need to prepare my new seedling beds for planting, and would like to have all the new seedlings planted by the end of May.

Well, next year I plan on doing yet another bed. I have it marked out and plan on starting the 'dig' end of March, when the weather warms a bit. I'm going to have it tilled up like I did my front bed, since there are some tree roots rather close to the suface. We had a strong wind that knocked out most of the tree. Oh well that's the way it goes :)) More room and sun for the DL. I am going to do part of it in black and white daylilies, like a checker board!! Got my list of black DL ready to order or search for, (with great thanks to this forum), creating my white list now.

ingre4, what white or near white are you considering?

Then I am going to plant white or cream with darker eyes in the middle.
I love the idea of theme beds, I had a bicolor bed at one point, but you know how it goes, you find a DL you have to have and there is no room, except in the 'theme' bed, so in it goes and out goes the theme.
I am going to do a butterfly bed. I already have Paper and Mokan Butterfly, so they will start it out.
    I will also join AHS.
This sounds like a NEW YEARS RESOLUTION list doesn't it?
But it is a list I know I can keep.

Hi Cindy! I am thinking about these white or near white
daylilies: Jolly White Giant, Sunday Gloves, Heidi Edelweiss, Light the Way and maybe one or two double ones. In America you have so many more beautiful daylilies to make your choice from than we have here. I saw a photo of Julia's Choice, so beautiful. Last Snowflake and the second is Heavenly Angel Ice are also so lovely. At the moment they can't be found here for example.
    Greetings and Good Luck! Ingmarie

I hope to add some Daylilies, with some diamond dusting to them.

Some of you are really making me feel better about all of my garden chores that are looming. I have a big area, so maintenance is a full time job all by itself. I am so glad that I am not in the building a new bed boat for spring (at least not yet... there is a long and boring winter to make it through in which I have to prevent myself from buying too many more plants!)

Good luck with all of your projects, and thank you for sharing them with us!

--I'm going to plant many, many daylilies in all the new beds I'm creating NOW. Yes, you got it....we've had nighttime temps under 20, snow, ground has frozen, long-term forecast is pretty much more winter weather....and I'm busily creating new beds. No tilling or spring prep for me; I'm doing the lasagna bed thing now. Cardboard and newspapers have been laid where I want the beds, and I'm busily piling on the leaves, coffee grounds, paper plates, contents of compost bucket etc etc.

Come spring, I have many daylilies living temporarily in the veg garden and still in pots that will finally go into the ground.

--I'm also going to replace my dead camera and take pics of every daylily, single blooms and clump shots.

--Plan to record more info, e.g., FFO, number of fans, etc etc.

    --Plan to visit more gardens.

--Plan to buy more daylilies :)))

I know we all seem to get into trouble over the winter buying daylilies (that Lily Auction is soooo very tempting) and then we must do that new garden bed first thing in the spring before all those daylilies show up.

Now my idea will not do you any good if you need to do that for your spring purchases but I have found that doing new garden beds late in the fall works best for me. Lets face it, I KNOW I will be buying for spring so might as well be ready. This way, it is so much easier to deal with the spring planting rush, when all those boxes of daylilies packed to the rafters, seem to show up all at once.

Last fall I fixed up all the gardens I had created as I had redone the side of my driveway, made a new terraces garden, put in the quarter pie garden with brick edging and spread compost , so all I had to do there was plant. They were even mulched, I only had to push aside the mulch, plant and push the mulch back around the newly planted daylilies. Worked out very well.

Still had to hussel though as I had planned to do that cosmos garden off the end of the veggie garden but that I had to do in the spring. I dug out all the raspberries that were the end of that rectangular space. Then I edged (put edger blocks) that whole space including the part that was still my veggie garden (mostly tomatoes) and pulled the end out way more into the lawn than it used to be, I spread compost and lots of leaves on top which was really lasana gardening as I did not dig up the grass, just piled on top of it. When the daylilies came, I had it all ready to plant but I had to get working very early in the spring in order to have that garden bed done. It now has all my Phil Korth daylilies and it turned out pretty good. But for me at least, getting those beds done in the fall and letting them sit over winter was preferrable.

Now I have added to my list of things I plan to do, is buy Jolly White Giant. Thanks Ingmarie, It's a beauty and it looks like it's a later bloom. I'm arranging the bed by heights , so this one is great, and I am trying to get different blooming times, didn't have any later ones. I knew of Jolly Red Giant but didn't know about the white sibling!!!! I'm finding some of the 'whites' to be somewhat pink, even the descriptions vary. I did a search here and found an earlier posting on white DL.
Didn't think about your lack of 'suppliers' there :( ,
but thanks for the great list. Lots of things to do, afterall, Maybe the 'snow season' is a good thing afterall.
