Identity crisis

Look what Great Arrival has done! It had a tough year with the 2012 drought and heat, then last year it struggled to come back, and was very small, compared to the huge beautiful plant it used to be. This year it seems to be having an identity crisis.

I suppose that could be a seedling, but I don't think it was there last year.It might be a cross with its neighbor, Sun Power.

Sandy I have Great Arrival and it is anything but as it has been slow for me. It is related to Great Expectations so that may be the color confusion. Pretty plant as I am partial to flash ones. Paula

This was Great Arrival before it had its problems, in 2010.

where have i been.. i didnt know there was a reverse of GE ...

there are this year seedlings under the yellow ... green ones.. a yellow would NEVER outgrow a green seedling.. at germination .. less chlorophyll ...

so its either a second year seedling.. but you say it wasnt there last year ...

which leads me to think.. its a yellow sport on the crown ..

the HLibrary lists no progeny ... you might be state of the art here ...

hosta are inherently unstable.. and any given one can do weird things ... like sporting ... it not rare... but not all that common

if the history is correct .. GE from which it came... is a sport of sieboldinan elegans.. [of which there are a couple million versions.. since they thought it came true from seed] .. but setting that aside.. there are a couple very old yellow versions in the group ... of which i am blanking right now ... golden this.. gold that... but if its on the crown.. one would suspect a big yellow sieboldiana type plant ...

i would most likely.. leave it there for this season.. and not expect it to come back next year.. but if it did .. at that point i might dig it out ...

Ken, we may be looking at different things, but I think what you are calling green seedlings are just wild violets. Heaven knows I see a lot of them around here, anyway!

Sandy, whether sport or seedling, I'm interested in how your little guy grows through the season! It almost has a "frosted" yellow look to it...a bit like my young 'Cold Heart.'

Ken, it might have been there last year. If it was, I didn't see it. I may carefully dig around it with my fingers to see if it is free or attached. If it appears to be free, I'll probably move it. If it's attached to the crown, I'll wait and see if it comes back next year. Yeah jadie those green seedlings are violets.

Wouldn't be the first time I found a yellow seedling in that vicinity, I have one that I'm pretty sure is progeny of Sun Power and something else, maybe Midwest Magic. It's quite different from Sun Power but still yellow. I named it Phoebe (Daughter of the Sun) just for fun. This will be it's 4th year, I'll take a good picture when it is all the way unfurled.

Guess I need to crawl under the snowball bush behind it and look for more seedlings, lol!
