Baking Soda and Soil

Hello....Recently I have read that thinly applying baking soda inside an edged garden bed ( about 6 inches wide) changes the PH of the soil and grass/ weeds will not grow in those areas. From all that I have read this seems correct.

Has anyone tried this? Are there any negatives that you know of and how often does it need to be repeated? Also, will it harm any nearby plants?
