I'm south of you so don't know for certain but I've been to a couple of your local farmer's markets and believe they sell garlic. I grow about 80-100 heads each year for the past 20 years. It's not hard. I find it helpful to soak the separated cloves in a 10% bleach soluction. This kills mold, fungus, etc that can rot them. Plant around Columbus day or up to mid Nov, 6" apart in all directions, about 4" deep. I use soy meal (from Agway, it's a hog fattener but supplies nitrogen over the whole season as it breaks down) Also need a little potassium when planting and again around June. This promotes root growth now (you want the roots to develop over the winter, not the greens)and in Spring, it encourages bulbing. I plant my own garlic, both hard neck and soft neck of several kinds that I've accumulated over the years. I originally got planting garlic at the Garlic Festival. This year it's week after next, Sept 26 and 27. Come on down for all the garlic info anyone needs. They have experts on hand to answer questions, that's where I learned about the soy meal for fertilizer.

Thanks so much for that link. Interestingly, I went to a farm market today and got to talking to the owner and she also recommended the Garlic festival. Says that is where she goes every year. Thanks again, I'll be heading down for sure!

You can also use large bulbs you buy at the farmers market  ask the farmer whether they're good as planting garlic.
